The electric motor and battery work together to power the vehicle at low speeds, while the gasoline or diesel engine takes over at higher speeds or when more power is needed. This allows hybrid vehicles to achieve better fuel economy and lower emissions than traditional gasoline or diesel-powered vehicles. If so, then brake servicing should be at the top of your list. Not only is it important for safety and security, but proper brake servicing can also save you time and money in repairs down the road. This article is your comprehensive guide to ensuring your brake servicing is done correctly. You’ve likely heard horror stories about brakes failing or not working properly when they are needed most. But with some knowledge and understanding, you can ensure that your brakes are always in peak working condition. We’ll cover everything from how to spot signs of wear and tear to what types of preventive measures you should take when it comes to brake servicing. So if you want to protect yourself and your car from unnecessary damage, read on! Brake servicing can seem intimidating, but with this helpful guide, you’ll have all the information needed to make sure that yours are always serviced correctly and safely. What Is Brake Servicing?Have you ever wondered what brake servicing is? Well, it’s basically just a check-up for your brakes. It’s important to have this service performed regularly because it ensures your brakes are in prime condition so you can stay safe while driving on the roads. It’s easy to overlook brake servicing, especially if everything seems to be working fine. But that feeling of safety and security when driving should never be taken for granted! Regularly checking up on your brakes is a vital part of keeping yourself and your loved ones safe. So, how do you know it’s been done correctly? Well, there are a few things you can look out for. First off, make sure all the components of your braking system are in good condition; if something looks worn or damaged, replace it as soon as possible. Secondly, check the fluid levels; topping them off if needed will ensure efficient braking performance. And finally, ensure the brake pads are replaced on time – this will save money in the long run! Bottom line: getting your brakes serviced regularly is really important – both for your safety and peace of mind! Don’t put it off any longer – go and get it done today! Steps To Ensure Brake Servicing Is Done CorrectlyWell, we all know how important brakes are for safe driving. But what’s the best way to make sure brake servicing is done correctly? Thankfully there are some steps you can take to ensure this essential service is done properly. First off, it’s important to make sure you’re taking your vehicle to a reputable service center that has experience in brake servicing and repair. This will help ensure they use high-quality parts and employ experienced technicians who know exactly what needs to be done. Don’t just choose the most convenient option – do your research first! Another great way to make sure brake servicing is done right is by getting regular inspections and tune-ups. You should have an inspection every 10,000 miles (16,000 km) or so and a tune-up about every 20,000 miles (32,000 km). This will help catch small issues before they become big problems down the line and also help extend the life of your brakes. And last but not least, don’t forget about maintenance! Regularly checking your brakes for wear and tear and replacing parts when necessary can go a long way in keeping them functioning properly. Plus, regularly cleaning the area around your brakes can help prevent dust build-up, which could interfere with their performance. Taking these steps will give you peace of mind knowing that your brakes are in good condition and ready for whatever comes next! How often should brakes be inspected and repaired? We typically recommend that brakes be inspected at least once a year or more often if you notice any signs of wear or problems. It’s also a good idea to have your brakes checked during regularly scheduled maintenance services, such as oil changes. Additionally, if you notice any signs of wear or problems with your brakes, such as squealing or grinding noises, reduced braking power, or a brake warning light on the dashboard, it’s important to have them inspected and serviced as soon as possible. It’s worth mentioning that the recommended frequency of brake inspection can vary depending on the vehicle, the driving conditions, and the manufacturer’s recommendations. Some manufacturers have different recommended brake pad replacement intervals based on the type of pad, the vehicle, and the driving style. Common Issues With Brake ServicingNow that we’ve gone through the steps for performing brake servicing let’s talk about some of the potential issues that can come up. As you might expect, there are a few common pitfalls when it comes to brake servicing – and knowing what to look out for can make all the difference. First off, one of the most common problems is incorrect installation or adjustment. You want to make sure that everything is installed correctly and set up in accordance with manufacturer specs. Otherwise, it could lead to serious damage down the line. And on top of that, don’t forget to check your brakes regularly; if they’re too tight or too loose, you’ll need to adjust them accordingly. Another problem that often arises is improper lubrication. If you’re not careful when lubricating your brakes, it can weaken their performance and lead to dangerous situations while driving. So be sure to use the right type of lubricant and apply it carefully – paying extra attention to any exposed parts of your brake system. And finally, keep an eye out for worn-out brake components, as they will reduce braking efficiency significantly over time. Pay special attention when inspecting things like rotors and calipers – if they show signs of wear or damage, then they should be replaced as soon as possible so you can get back on the road safely! Key Considerations For Optimal Brake PerformanceAlright, now let’s talk about the key considerations for optimal brake performance. We all want our brakes to be as efficient and effective as possible, so it’s important to consider a few things before you start serving them. First of all, if you’re going to service your brakes yourself, you need to make sure you have the right tools for the job. Having the right equipment will make your work easier and help prevent any mistakes or damage during servicing. Secondly, it’s important to check your brake parts carefully. Look over each part thoroughly and look for signs of damage or wear and tear. If anything looks off, then replace it as soon as possible. This is especially important if you’re working on an older vehicle since the brake parts may already be worn down from years of use. Finally, take your time when servicing your brakes – rushing through can lead to more problems later. Make sure everything is done correctly, and that no corners are being cut – after all, safety should always come first! ConclusionBrake servicing is an important part of regular car maintenance and should be done correctly to ensure optimal brake performance. It can be a tricky process, but with the right knowledge and guidance, it doesn’t have to be. Via https://advancedautomotiveva.com/brake-servicing-a-guide-to-ensuring-its-done-correctly/ The Importance of Vehicle Safety InspectionsYou must take road safety seriously for the sake of yourself and other road users. You may not be able to control your vehicle in an emergency if its safety equipment isn’t properly maintained. This simple fact highlights the importance of regular vehicle safety inspections. An annual inspection is necessary to keep your car street legal in Virginia. But you shouldn’t get your car inspected just for compliance. It can also help you in many other ways and save you plenty of money in the long run. Read on to learn about the importance of vehicle inspections and how they can benefit your car. Virginia Requires Annual Safety InspectionsThe most immediate reason to get your vehicle inspected is to comply with the law. Your car will simply not be street legal without an up-to-date inspection sticker on your windshield. The Commonwealth of Virginia requires all vehicles to undergo several pass/fail screening checks each year. In addition to the safety equipment, technicians will check your car’s emissions during the inspection. You may risk getting pulled over and fined If you have an expired inspection sticker on your car — or worse, no sticker at all. Additionally, you can get a new ticket for every day your car goes uninspected. In the worst-case scenario, you could quickly end up with a hefty bunch of fines. There are no exceptions to the law either, apart from certain antique vehicles not used for regular transportation. The only way for private and commercial vehicles to avoid these fines is to get an annual safety inspection. 6 Benefits of Getting Your Vehicle InspectedGetting a vehicle safety inspection keeps your car street legal, but it also does much more than that. Simply put, inspections ensure your car is in good working order. Regular inspections can help you save both money and your nerves in many ways. Here are the six most important benefits of vehicle safety inspections. 1. Extend the Car’s LifespanOne of the most significant advantages of having technicians inspect your vehicle is that it can increase the car’s lifespan. Technicians check every system and safety feature of your car and can spot minor issues you may have not known about. You can avoid serious breakdowns by getting these small problems fixed promptly. As a result, you may increase your car’s service life by several years. 2. Spend Less on FuelTechnicians don’t just inspect your safety equipment — they also take a look at your vehicle’s emissions and fuel systems. Faults, dirt, or leaks in these systems can force your car to consume more fuel than necessary. If you get these issues fixed, the mileage you get out of each tank of fuel can go up noticeably. You’ll spend less money at the pump, and keeping your fuel system clean also lowers harmful tailpipe emissions. It’s a win-win situation. 3. Fewer Expensive Car RepairsThe thing about car issues is that small ones usually escalate big problems over time. Every car owner dreads taking an ailing vehicle to a repair shop and getting a huge bill as a result. For this reason, it’s important to address even tiny problems before they spiral out of control. You’ll save money down the line by avoiding larger repairs. 4. Stay Safer on the RoadWorn tires, damaged brakes, or loose steering systems can put you at significant risk. But these issues get even worse in northern Virginia, where hot and humid summers and icy winters can lead to extreme driving conditions. Keeping the systems and safety equipment of your car in good condition can help avoid catastrophic accidents. Safety inspections help you protect not only yourself, but also your passengers and everyone you share the road with. 5. Save on InsuranceDriving a vehicle with faulty safety systems increases the likelihood of getting into accidents. The more accidents you have — even minor ones — the higher your insurance premiums will be. Vehicle inspections ensure all the systems of your car are performing as well as they can. You can respond to dangerous situations more effectively and avoid accidents. A clean driving record keeps your insurance company happy, while you can be happy with lower annual bills. 6. Drive with Peace of MindDriving can be stressful as is, especially in difficult conditions, like on icy Virginia roads in winter. In these situations, additional worries about your car’s health are the last thing you need. If you’re constantly preoccupied with strange noises or poor car performance, you may get distracted from what’s happening on the road. By getting your car regularly inspected, you can stay confident that every system on your car is doing its job right. With that peace of mind, you can pay more attention to the traffic and stay safer behind the wheel. A Thorough Safety Inspection Covers Your Entire CarA positive thing about Virginia safety inspections is that all repair shops must follow the same 24-point inspection manual. The manual covers all the most important aspects of your car, so you can rest assured that an approved vehicle is a safe one. During the inspection, technicians will check your brakes, lights, steering and suspension systems, exhaust and fuel systems, seat belts, airbags, and more. If they notice any issues, they will mark them down and help you fix them. All of this helps you maintain your car’s health and avoid serious problems. Imagine your car suddenly breaking down at the side of a remote road due to a problem you didn’t even know about. Towing and repairing your car and getting a possible temporary vehicle will surely cost you more than a car inspection. How Often You Should Get Your Car InspectedIt’s recommended that you get your car inspected at least once a year. Coincidentally (or not), this is also how often you need to get a state-sanctioned car inspection done in Virginia. The annual state inspection will most likely keep your car in fine working order. But it may be a good idea to get a safety check-up every six months, especially if you drive an older vehicle or just want to play things safe. A good rule of thumb is to ask your technician to inspect your car every time you get an oil change. In fact, reliable auto repair shops — like Advanced Automotive — will offer you a free courtesy check with every oil change service. But how much do vehicle inspections cost? State inspection prices in Virginia are locked in and currently stand at $20 for cars, $12 for motorcycles, and $51 for commercial vehicles. The costs of regular inspections vary between shops, so it’s difficult to give you an estimate. However, as we mentioned, good and trustworthy repair shops will often give you a complimentary check-up with regular maintenance services. What to Do If You Fail a Vehicle InspectionBut sometimes your car might fail a vehicle inspection, no matter how well you’ve taken care of it. Worn tires or brakes, damage caused by a loose rock, or a tiny crack in your windshield could all get you the dreaded rejection sticker. What should you do if your car fails the inspection? The good news is that a failed inspection is not the end of the world. A rejection sticker on your windshield will still entitle you to operate your vehicle for 15 days. However, the sticker does not mean you’re immune to laws governing defective car systems or equipment. For example, if your tires are too worn, you can still get a ticket for it — even if you have the rejection sticker. Also, your car will naturally not be street legal beyond the 15 days. This is why you must repair the issues that led to the inspection failure as soon as possible. A good car repair shop can help you make an appointment to fix the problems as soon as they reject your vehicle. An inaccurate speedometer can put you in great danger and you must get the issue fixed as soon as you notice it. But you might be wondering where you can get speedometer calibration and how it works. Auto speedometers aren’t particularly complex devices, but they are very sensitive. Even meters on brand-new cars that just rolled out of the factory can give you inaccurate readings. Read on to learn everything you need to know about speedometer calibration in Virginia, including where to get speed calibration service. How Does a Car Speedometer Work?A speedometer — or speedo — serves a simple but vitally important purpose. Whether it uses an old-fashioned needle dial or has a cutting-edge digital display, the speedometer tells you how fast your car is moving. But how exactly does the speedometer know your car’s speed? The answer might surprise you. It’s because of magnets! All speedometers use magnetism to measure the number of revolutions your vehicle’s driveshaft does per mile. This measurement is transferred to your speedo display. In general, cars have one of two types of speedometers — mechanical or electronic. Mechanical SpeedometersMechanical (or eddy-current) speedos are connected to your car’s driveshaft with a long and flexible cable. The connection point is “downstream” of the gearbox. This means changing gears doesn’t affect the measurement and your speedo reading won’t suddenly change when shifting. As your engine runs, the driveshaft rotates and turns the speedo cable around as well. The cable in turn spins a magnet housed inside a speed cup. The magnetic currents will cause the speed cup to turn in the opposite direction of the magnet. A hairspring between the cup and the display dial tightens as the cup turns, limiting its range of movement. As the cup turns, it moves the needle on your speedo dial, indicating your car’s speed. Mechanical speedos have remained virtually unchanged for decades, and they’re still common in modern cars. Electronic SpeedometersLike many other car components, speedometers are increasingly becoming electronic. Electronic speedos also measure driveshaft revolutions, but they use a different operating principle. An electronic speedo relies on a magnet connected to the driveshaft. As the driveshaft rotates, this magnet passes another one, triggering a sensor. The sensor sends the number of revolutions to a circuit, which amplifies the signal and sends it to the speedo display. Electronic speedometers often have digital displays that show your speed in numbers. But they can also be connected to an electric motor that moves a needle, like on a mechanical speedo. Electronic speedometers are in general more durable and accurate than mechanical ones. They are also more expensive, though, which is why even modern cars sometimes use mechanical meters. What is Speedometer Calibration?Just as any other car component, speedos will eventually experience wear and tear. This can cause them to become inaccurate and not display your car’s true speed. Even new cars can have their speedo readings off by 1-3 mph. To correct the issue, you need speedometer testing. During this test, a technician will measure your car’s true speed and compare this reading to the number displayed on your speedometer. Technicians use a device called a dynamometer to determine your vehicle’s true speed by measuring tire rotations. They will increase the speed gradually over 10 mph increments. As they work, the technicians will jot down the true speed and the speedometer reading on a calibration report. If the technician notices that readings are significantly different, they will recommend speedometer calibration to you. They can adjust the speedo components so that your car’s display shows you an accurate speed. What Can Cause Speedometer Inaccuracy? Many things can throw your speedo off the whack and cause it to lie to you. Some of the most common causes of speedometer inaccuracy include:
How Much Does Speedometer Calibration Cost?Speedometer calibration is a relatively inexpensive and fast auto maintenance service. Most repair shops charge a flat fee for the service. The average price of speedo calibration in Virginia is approximately $100. The famous saying states that time is money. A speedo test and calibration won’t cost you much time either. It usually takes less than an hour, depending on how busy your car repair shop is. Why Do I Need Speedometer Calibration? When driving, you must have an accurate idea of how fast your car is traveling. The reason is very simple — not knowing your speed is incredibly dangerous. Every additional mph makes controlling your car and responding to risky situations more difficult. When you travel at great speeds, you have less time to hit the breaks or steer your car before a potential collision. Higher speeds also narrow your peripheral vision and make it more difficult to process the things you can see. Making strong, sudden steering movements at high speeds can cause your vehicle to spin out of control or even roll. If you’re traveling faster than what your speedometer shows, you may try to steer too forcefully. The results could be disastrous. Northern Virginia also gets a lot of rain and snow is common during our cold winters. Driving in these adverse conditions is challenging enough as it is. An inaccurate speedometer makes it more difficult to adapt your speed on slippery, snowy, or icy roads. Last but not least, a lying speedo puts you at risk of speeding even in perfect weather. Speeding in Virginia can earn you possibly hefty fines and demerit points on your license that remain for multiple years. Some speeding infractions, like going too fast in a school zone, could even get you charged with a crime. Can Speedometer Calibration Help with Speeding Tickets? If you do happen to get a speeding ticket, a speedometer calibration test could help you lower the fine. Let’s say a police officer pulled you over for speeding and gave you a fine. But you paid close attention to your speed and know that you shouldn’t have gone above the limit. What gives? It could be that your speedometer has gotten so inaccurate that you broke the speed limit without even realizing it. According to Virginia law, courts can consider speedometer calibration reports as valid evidence for lowering a fine. It could also lower your offense from reckless driving to a lighter speeding infraction. If you can prove that your speedometer showed a lower speed than you were actually traveling at, courts may prove lenient. But not just any speedo calibration report will do. The document has to be signed by your technician and properly notarized. Without these authentications, the courts can’t accept the report as valid evidence. If you receive a speeding ticket and suspect your speedo reading at the time wasn’t accurate, it may be worth getting a calibration check. Make sure the repair shop doing the check can issue you a notarized report. Also, ask the technicians to include identifying information on the report, such as your car’s year, make, model, license plate, and VIN number. These details can help you prove the tested car is the same one you drove at the time of the infraction. The post When to Get Speedometer Calibrated appeared first on Advanced Automotive. Via https://advancedautomotiveva.com/calibrate-my-speedometer/ Many technicians will tell you that conventional motor oils are outdated and you should switch to synthetic oil. But this insistence may leave you wondering if that’s really true. What actually are the advantages and disadvantages of using conventional oil? Although it’s true that synthetics can perform better in many situations, conventional oils can still have their uses. It all comes down to the age and make of your car and what you’re looking for in your oil. Read on to learn more about the pros and cons of conventional motor oils. What Is Conventional Motor Oil?Before we get into the advantages (and disadvantages), you need to know what kinds of oils we’re talking about. After all, what exactly makes motor oil “conventional?” Conventional motor oil — also called mineral oil, regular oil, or traditional oil — is an oil product used in car engines. Its purpose is to lubricate and protect engine parts, preventing excessive wear and ensuring the smooth operation of the engine. Without motor oil, your car engine would quickly grind to a halt or break. Traditional motor oils are produced by refining crude oil. To explain the process simply, manufacturers heat crude oil until it leaves behind a heavier petroleum oil product. This heavy oil serves as the base material for motor oil, into which manufacturers add certain additives to improve its performance characteristics. Full synthetic oil, on the other hand, doesn’t use crude petroleum oil as the base material. Instead, they’re manufactured around an entirely artificial oil. This gives synthetic oils a more uniform molecular structure which improves their performance. Finally, there are synthetic blend oils. As the name implies, these products are a mixture of synthetic and conventional oil. Manufacturers produce them to keep costs low while still providing better oil performance. The Advantages of Conventional OilSome technicians might insist that synthetics are better than conventional oils in every possible way. Synthetic oil does have many perks, but conventional oil nonetheless has its own unique upsides. Here are the most significant advantages of using conventional oil. AffordabilityConventional oil is much, much cheaper than synthetic oil. This alone is an overwhelmingly positive thing for many drivers. Synthetic oils can cost anywhere from two to ten times as much as conventional oil. Naturally, that means you’ll have to pay a lot more when you get an oil change. Although synthetics can result in cost savings in the long run, the initial high price is not something you should ignore completely. The reason behind the price difference is the level of refinement. Although conventional oil is a refined product, synthetic oils are refined and processed to a higher degree. As a result, manufacturing them takes more time and money, and the manufacturers have to make up for the higher production costs. AccessibilityAnother point in conventional oils’ favor is that they’re very easy to find. You can reliably expect every auto repair shop and garage to have a conventional motor oil option that works for your car. These days, most new cars roll out of the factory with synthetic oil in their engines, but it wasn’t always so. In fact, oil manufacturers started introducing synthetics to the popular market only around 30 years ago. Before that, nearly every car — with the exception of heavy-duty or high-performance vehicles — used conventional motor oil. And conventional oils still work fine in modern cars, so you can always count on finding a suitable traditional oil. Better for Old EnginesAs we just mentioned, conventional oil used to be the standard engine oil for personal vehicles. Car manufacturers build their engines specifically to work with traditional motor oils. If your car was made before 2000 or so, it’s highly likely that its engine is intended to use conventional oil. Older engines aren’t as compact as modern ones, so conventional oils can easily flow through them to provide lubrication and protection. Additionally, if your engine is past its prime, it may not benefit much — if at all — from the perks of synthetic oils. Adding synthetic oil to a 30-year-old engine can cost you a lot more while giving you practically nothing in return. ConvenienceYour car may already have conventional oil in it — especially if it’s an old vehicle. If you’re not having any performance issues, swapping to synthetic oil may simply not be worth the hassle and cost. Synthetic oils can extend the lifespan of car engines significantly. But if your engine is already a few years away from retirement, even the best synthetic oils won’t make it last any longer. In this kind of situation, you might as well keep using conventional oil. The Disadvantages of Conventional OilConventional oils can be advantageous in certain situations. That said, synthetic oils simply offer better performance than traditional ones. Due to their artificial nature, oil manufacturers can fine-tune synthetics to simply do things better than conventional oils. When compared to synthetics, conventional oils have these disadvantages. Less Engine ProtectionMost conventional oils have a higher viscosity than their synthetic counterparts. The consistency of the base oil used in traditional motor oils isn’t as consistent in molecular size as that of synthetics. As a result, conventional oils can’t protect your engine as well. Modern engines are very compact and have thin, narrow oil lines. High-viscosity traditional oils may not flow properly throughout the entire engine. They may also not coat parts properly, causing them to have increased and uneven wear. Poor Heat and Cold ResistanceBoth hot and cold weather can have a strong negative impact on motor oil quality. In cold conditions, conventional oil becomes more viscous and your car takes a longer time to circulate it through the engine. Without proper lubrication, your engine parts could get damaged. On the other hand, hot weather can cause traditional oils to evaporate and degrade. This can lead to insufficient oil levels, which will also cause excessive part wear. Synthetic oils resist extreme temperatures on both ends of the scale better than conventional ones. As such, they may be a better choice in northern Virginia, where the summers are hot and winters freezing. Higher Oil ConsumptionSince conventional oils degrade faster, they will not stay in serviceable condition as long as synthetic oils. If you use conventional oil in your car, you will most likely have to get an oil change more often than with synthetics. This is an important factor when deciding if swapping to synthetics will be worth it. If changing conventional oil often would cost more than the initially high price of synthetics, it may be worth switching over. Lower Fuel MileageThe more work your car’s engine does, the more fuel it will consume. The high viscosity and poor cold weather performance of conventional oils will force your car to put in more work than necessary to circulate oil through the engine. As a result, the mileage you get out of one tank of gas will be lower than with a comparable synthetic oil. Not only will the poor oil circulation wear engine parts down, but you’ll also pay more at the pump. Higher EmissionsThe lower fuel efficiency of conventional oils doesn’t just cost you money in gas — it also produces unnecessarily high levels of emissions. The more fuel you burn, the more gasses and pollutants your car belches into the air. Synthetic oils can help you consume less fuel and result in lower emissions. Additionally, conventional oils leach contaminants and water from the ambient air. These contaminants can combust in the high heat of your engine, degrading the oil and further increasing engine emissions. Synthetic oils stay clean longer and can help cut engine emissions as well. Conventional or Synthetic: Which One Is Right For Your Car?So, which should you choose — conventional or synthetic oil? There’s no simple answer, and both oils can perform adequately in both old and new vehicles. As a general rule of thumb, your car’s age may be a good indicator of whether or not you should switch to synthetics. If you drive an old car that is closing the end of its life, you’re probably better off sticking with conventional oil. Your senior vehicle won’t have time to get much out of the benefits of synthetics, so conventional oils’ lower price may save you money. But if you drive a new car, you may want to choose synthetics instead. Their superior performance characteristics can help extend your engine’s service life and get you more miles out of the car. And even though you may pay more for the oil, you’ll save money in the long run since your car will need less maintenance. Via https://advancedautomotiveva.com/what-are-the-advantage-disadvantage-conventional-oil/ You’re out on a ride on a warm summer’s day when things start getting a bit too warm. Suddenly, steam billows out from under your hood, and the engine temperature gauge turns bright red! In this situation, it’s essential to know what to do when your car engine overheats. Any car — no matter how new — can overheat for many reasons. Road debris could crack or loosen coolant lines, thermostats may malfunction, or vital cooling components could simply wear out. You never know when it’ll happen, so it pays to be prepared for engine overheating. Read on to learn six things you should and should not do if your car overheats. What to Do if Your Car OverheatsIf you notice any signs that your engine might be overheating, you need to act quickly. You can seriously damage your car and put yourself and others in danger if you ignore the issues. Here’s what to do as soon as you realize your engine has overheated.
The first two things you should do when your engine is overheating might not be what you’d guess. But both of them are important for helping bring the engine temperature down. When you notice your car overheating, immediately turn off the air conditioner. Sure, it blows cold air, but your engine components have to work hard to cool the air. Switching the AC off reduces strain on your engine and can help it cool off. Next, set your heater to the highest temperature and turn the fan to maximum speed. It sounds strange, we know, but this is due to how car heaters work. The heater blows hot air from the engine into the car’s cabin. It’s not ideal during a hot Virginia summer, but it can help vent the heat from the engine.
Once your AC is off and the heater on, don’t continue driving. Pull over as soon as you spot a safe place to do so. Driving with an overheating car can seriously harm your engine components. It could even cause permanent damage that can’t be repaired. In such a case, you may have to buy a new engine — or an entirely new car.
Once you’ve pulled over, you can let the engine run for a couple of minutes. Keep an eye on the engine heat gauge — if it’s going down, the measures you’ve taken so far have started to cool the engine, and it may be worth letting them keep working. But if the engine thermometer is still sitting in red, turn the engine off. Something has gone seriously wrong, and it’s best to turn the engine off and let it cool.
Once the engine has cooled some, you should check the coolant levels. Your owner’s manual will tell you where your coolant tank is and how to check the liquid level. In case there’s little coolant in the engine, you’ve found the likely reason your car is overheating. If you have a can of coolant in the car (a smart thing to keep in your trunk), you should add some to the engine. If you don’t have any additional coolant, you shouldn’t drive the car any farther and call a tow truck.
While you have your hood open, check if you can notice any obvious signs of damage or problems. It’s probably not a good idea to poke around a hot engine too much, but certain signs could tell you why the engine overheated. One of the most common causes of overheating is a coolant leak. If you can see leaking coolant lines or smell an odd, sweet smell in the engine, it’s likely you’ve sprung a leak. But if you don’t notice anything obvious, don’t worry — your technician will find the problem.
Any time your engine overheats, you need to get your engine inspected by professionals as soon as possible. Even short-term overheating may have damaged your engine components and could lead to serious issues down the line. Even if your engine cooled down properly with a simple coolant top-up and seems to be working fine, you shouldn’t drive your car farther than the nearest car repair shop. And if your car keeps overheating no matter what you do, you absolutely shouldn’t even start it. What NOT to Do When Your Car OverheatsIt’s important to know what to do in case your car overheats. But it’s also just as vital to know what you shouldn’t do to keep yourself, your passengers, and other road users safe. If your engine overheats, here are the most crucial things to avoid.
Keep your head cool, even if your engine isn’t. It’s scary to suddenly see your car belch out steam and the temperature gauge jump up, but avoid any sudden swerving or slamming the brakes. Slow down calmly and bring your car to a controlled stop at a safe pullout by the side of the road. If you’re stuck on a road with heavy traffic, leave the car through the doors facing away from the road to avoid jumping in front of other vehicles.
We mentioned it already, but this is a point worth repeating — do not drive any farther than you have to. Pull over and stop at the nearest safe place. Running an overheating engine is dangerous. It could cause permanent damage and break the entire engine, or even cause it to catch fire. No matter how near your destination is, don’t push your luck.
After you’ve stopped, don’t go and open the hood immediately. Due to the engine’s heat, it will likely be incredibly hot, and you may seriously burn yourself. Let your car stand idle for at least 15 minutes to let the engine cool off. Keep checking the engine heat gauge on your dashboard and wait until it’s fallen to normal readings. When you do open the hood, touch it very lightly at first to make sure it’s no longer blazing hot.
It might be a tempting idea to throw some cold water on your engine if it’s still running hot once your hood is open. But don’t do it. You might cool down the engine, but you could also break it. Pouring cold water over steaming hot metal could cause a thermal contraction reaction. This can crack and break the metal components. Cracked gears or casings will render your engine completely non-functional.
Whenever you find yourself stranded by the side of the road, it’s essential that you don’t leave your vehicle. As long as it’s safe to do so, stick as close to your car as possible until help arrives. If you wander off in search of coolant in a strange area, you could get lost. Additionally, tow truck crews and other rescuers may get to the car sooner than you think, and they won’t be able to find you. You can move farther away from the road if it seems like traffic could put you in danger. But you should always stay within view of your car.
If it’s clear your car isn’t going anywhere, call a repair shop or the police for help immediately. This way, you can move your car away from the roadside as soon as possible and won’t risk getting hit by passing traffic. Even if your car turns on, don’t simply start driving as if nothing happened. The post 6 Things to Do (and NOT Do) When Your Car Overheats appeared first on Advanced Automotive. Via https://advancedautomotiveva.com/what-to-do-when-your-car-overheats/ Every car needs regular engine oil changes to keep running. If you still use traditional oil in your vehicle, your technician may have suggested that you switch over to synthetic oil. But what are the benefits of synthetic oil? Although you may think so, synthetic oils are not just car care companies’ marketing tricks. They can help all cars run longer and better and may save you a good chunk of money in the long run. Read on to learn the top 7 benefits of using full synthetic oil in your vehicle. The Benefits of Synthetic OilWhy should you swap to fully synthetic oil? If your car has run just fine with conventional engine oil, you might be hesitant to make the change. That’s understandable — engine oil is vital for your car, so you may not want to mess with it without a good reason. But the fact is there are multiple advantages to switching to synthetic oil. Here are the most important benefits:
An engine oil’s viscosity describes its resistance to flowing — in other words, how thick the oil is. Poor viscosity can make the oil flow through your engine difficult. This can be an issue with modern, compact car engines with thin oil lines and pathways. Synthetic oils have better viscosity than traditional engine oils. They can easily flow into your engine even through the most narrow lines. As a result, they can help your engine run smoother with adequate lubrication.
Traditional engine oils can struggle to deal with both high and low temperatures. This is a particular problem in northern Virginia since our summers are hot and humid. Meanwhile, in winter, freezing temperatures are normal. Cold weather can increase the oil’s viscosity, making it harder for it to circulate when you start your vehicle. Hot temperatures, on the other hand, can make traditional oils evaporate and deteriorate. Synthetic oils deal with both weather extremes much better than conventional oils. They flow smoothly even in the winter months while also enjoying higher stability under high heat.
While your engine runs, its components are constantly grinding against each other. The engine oil’s job is to provide lubrication to prevent extensive damage to the parts. Extreme temperatures and poor viscosity can make it difficult for conventional oils to flow throughout the entire engine. With their better flow characteristics and temperature resistance, synthetic oils better protect your engine. You can get more mileage from your car when your engine parts don’t wear down prematurely.
A lot is going on in your engine. As a result, the oil circulating through the engine gets exposed to multiple harmful conditions, from combustion and oxidation to water and particle contamination. These conditions can degrade conventional oils quickly and turn them into thick sludge that clogs your oil lines. Synthetics, on the other hand, are better at resisting all kinds of degradation. They stay in good condition much longer than traditional oils.
Many new vehicles come with turbochargers and very compact engines. The temperatures in turbochargers can rise even higher than those in conventional engines, and they also spin much faster. These high-performance parts must get proper lubrication. As you’ve learned, traditional engine oils degrade quickly in high-temperature conditions. They may also struggle to lubricate all parts in compact engines properly. Synthetic oils flow effortlessly through turbocharged engines and can resist the high heat of these components.
The harder your engine works, the more fuel it consumes. Without proper lubrication, your engine components can have difficulty turning correctly. As a result, they can wear down fast and consume much more fuel than is necessary. Due to their better viscosity, synthetic oils can flow into parts that conventional oils may not easily reach. You’ll get better lubrication for your engine that helps its components move effortlessly. Synthetics may give your car better mileage in certain conditions.
Last but not least, using synthetic oil can help your car run cleaner. Since it lubricates your engine better and flows more easily, your vehicle will waste less energy and burn less fuel. And the less fuel you burn, the fewer emissions you spew out of the tailpipe. Synthetic oils also resist contamination better than conventional oils. Engine oil contaminants can get scorched by the motor’s high heat, which not only degrades the oil but also produces combustion emissions. With synthetics, your oil stays cleaner longer and can help further reduce engine emissions. What is Synthetic Oil?You’ve learned a lot about the benefits of synthetic oil. But if you’re not exactly a gearhead, you may still be wondering what synthetic engine oil is. Synthetic oils aren’t a recent invention — they’ve existed for nearly 100 years. Synthetics consist of base oil, into which manufacturers add various additives to improve its characteristics. They are generally divided into three categories:
Unlike traditional engine oils, high-grade full synthetic oils are not made from crude petroleum oil. Instead, the base oil consists of artificially made chemical compounds. By making their own base oil, manufacturers can more closely control the oil’s performance. Some lower-grade synthetics still use crude oil as their base. However, this petroleum oil is more refined than the stuff you find in traditional oils. The refinement process gives the oil a more consistent molecular size and higher purity, resulting in better performance characteristics. Finally, there are synthetic blend oils. As you may guess, these engine oils are a mix of conventional and synthetic products. Generally speaking, they are better than simple traditional oils. That said, they can’t compete with full synthetic oil. Are There Downsides to Synthetic Oils? The significant number of benefits synthetic oils offer can make them seem like a silver-bullet solution to all your engine oil issues. But although they perform better, they have one significant downside. Simply put, synthetic oils are much more expensive. Since they’re formulated from a highly refined crude oil or a completely artificial base, manufacturing synthetic oils is more costly and laborious. Naturally, this will increase their cost. Synthetics can cost six to ten times more than traditional engine oil. Due to the high price tag, some drivers are hesitant to switch to synthetics. But the initial cost is a bit deceiving. Although you may pay more upfront, synthetic oils can save you money in the long run. Their better performance can significantly extend the lifespan of your car’s engine and may help you avoid costly repairs. Think of switching to synthetic oil as a long-term investment in your vehicle. Sure, you may pay more today. But you’ll save money down the line by taking better care of your car. How Often Do I Need to Change Synthetic Oil?Synthetic engine oils will last longer than conventional oils and can keep your vehicle running for longer. But time makes fools of us all, and even synthetic oils will degrade eventually. As such, you still need regular oil changes. Some synthetic oil manufacturers boast that their oils can last tens of thousands of miles. However, they likely achieved these impressive results during strictly controlled tests that don’t resemble real driving conditions. A good rule of thumb is to get a synthetic oil change every 6,000-15,000 miles. For a more accurate service interval estimate, it’s always best to consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual. The frequency of oil changes will also change depending on your driving habits, your vehicle’s make and model, and whether you regularly drive long distances or in extreme weather conditions. If you’ve only recently changed to synthetics, you may also need an oil change sooner rather than later. Synthetics can clean deposits and sludge left behind by traditional oil. This is a good thing, though — a clean engine is an engine that lasts longer. Reliable Oil Change Service in Chantilly and Warrenton, VASynthetic oils are great options for northern Virginia.
